In 2004, KC CAN! initiated a Playground Project to provide safe, high quality playground equipment to places and programs of need in Kansas City. Since then, we have placed playgrounds in several locations in our community. KC CAN! obtains playground equipment from a combination of in-kind donations and from funds raised at our annual auction. We have held several 'Volunteer Days' to disassemble or re-assemble playgrounds.
Blessed Sacrament Family Center
Blessed Sacrament Family Center in Kansas City, Kansas, provides classes and support for parents of foster children, parents or children involved with drugs, teenage parents and parents of children with disabilities. In 2008, KC CAN! provided and installed a new playground for pre-school children at the center.
Angels of Grace
KC CAN! partnered with Angels of Grace Family Center, a daycare center for at-need families, to help fulfill some essential needs. KC CAN! had previously partnered with Wanda Bibbs, the director of Angels of Grace, on other initiatives for low-income families in Wyandotte County. One critical need fulfilled in Spring of 2010 by KC CAN! was a playground for infants and toddlers. This playground was required for Angels of Grace to open its doors to that age group. KC CAN! purchased the playground set and partnered with Taylormade Commercial Installations to have it professionally installed, and incorporate all necessary safety features (e.g., rubber surfacing, etc.) to ensure a safe, fun outdoor play environment for the children at the daycare.
Operation Breakthrough
Operation Breakthrough provides education and support services for children in poverty. The organization serves more than 600 children every day, 98 percent of whom live below the poverty line. KC CAN! partnered with Operation Breakthrough to add a playground for small children on an undeveloped area of the campus. We installed a new play surface and new playground equipment. Every day the playground is used by many children in their programs. To learn more about Operation Breakthrough, visit www.operationalbreakthrough.org.
